It All Started Back In 1995
We’ve all heard stories about miraculous things happening, but this one is certainly one for the record books (and the medical books, too). It has long been understood that twins have an amazing connection to one another, and this story proves exactly that. You won’t believe what this set of newborn premature twins experienced.
It was a different time back in the 1990s, that’s for sure. However, premature babies were born fairly frequently — that has always been a thing. Twins Kyrie and Brielle Jackson were born 12 weeks before their due date at a hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. The girls were beautiful, but very tiny, and needed some extra attention to make sure they’d thrive. No one could have imagined the absolute emotional roller coaster the Jackson family would go on in the weeks to come.
One Of The Twins Had Been Doing Well, The Other Was Struggling
Akron Children’s Hospital
One of the twins, Kyrie, was doing well. She weighed a little over 2 pounds when she was born, but she was eating like a champ and she was gaining weight. Meanwhile, Brielle was having a more challenging time. The newborn was struggling to breathe and was not gaining any weight. Although she was doing “okay” at times, her parents — and her doctors — were hoping that she’d turn things around. They prayed that nothing bad would happen, but they had to face something very serious.
Like Many Premies, The Girls Were In Incubators
The premature newborns had to spend time in incubators, which is not uncommon for babies that are born early or are underweight or under-developed. The girls were in separate incubators, spending most of their days apart from one another, which isn’t something that most twins like, even when they are older. It was tough for the Jacksons to stay positive, but they had to. Even if the unthinkable were to happen. And it did. But the girls’ story doesn’t end how you might think.
Their Dad Was Trying To Stay Positive
“The nurses in the NICU were very honest. And they told me up front that ‘things look pretty good now, but, to be honest with you, over the next 48 to 72 hours, things could turn very quickly,'” said Brielle and Kyrie’s dad, Paul Jackson. The twins were three weeks old and seemed to be doing okay. With each passing day, Paul and his wife thought they were getting closer to getting completely out of the woods. They described what came next as the scariest moment of their lives.
Things Changed In The Blink Of An Eye
It all happened very quickly. Brielle’s breathing became extremely labored. Within seconds, her heart rate increased, beating super fast — way too fast for an infant. Her oxygen level dropped quickly — too quickly — and the Jacksons feared the worst. It is in moments like these where people hope and pray for a miracle of any kind. The Jacksons were completely helpless and one of their daughters was in serious distress. Believe it or not, things got even worse.
