For a household name, and a staple in recent surf films, Dave Rastovich remains a particularly enigmatic character. The Byron Bay local is one of the early pioneers of free surfing as an alternative to the competitive surf scene, and his taste for experimenting with different equipment played a role in ushering in a new era of openness to alternative craft.
It’s rare that Rasta sits down for extended interviews, but in his 45-minute conversation with Occy, the pair talk about Dave’s early years as a competitive swimmer, his decision to eschew contests, and living out an eco-conscious lifestyle.
